Mother and daughter Artist-in-Residence duo, Kayann and Abby Ausherman, share a passion for art and enjoy working together, brainstorming new ideas and experimenting with different concepts. Their residency at the Red Barn Studio, from August 7th to 12th, allows them to immerse themselves in the inspiring atmosphere created by Lester Raymer.
During the residency, Kayann will focus on developing a new body of work centered around intense scenes of foliage, exploring values and emphasizing negative space. She will experiment with combining various mediums to maximize their unique attributes. According to Kayann, this residency provides a much-needed break from her regular art production, offering an environment that encourages experimentation, and the incubation of fresh ideas.
Inspired by the complexities of relationships, Abby plans to continue her exploration of fabric’s limitations and characteristics. She will create intricate entanglements using quilting techniques, fabrics, embroidery, paper, and other media to experiment with various knotting techniques. Though still learning the basics of quilting, Abby aims to redefine the concept of quilts and their meaning through her work.
Additionally, Abby will be hosting a Fiber Collage workshop on Saturday, August 12th, from 9 am to noon. This workshop welcomes participants of all levels, with no prior sewing knowledge required. All supplies will be provided, but also making it a great opportunity to use any small fabric scraps anyone may have lying around. The workshop fee is $40 for members and $50 for non-members.
