Gretchen Esping, Lindsborg, will be the next Artist-in-Residence at the Red Barn Studio Museum, now through November 19 and will be working on a “Lindsborg Portrait Project.” Her project will be creating portraits of various Lindsborg residents. The Red Barn Studio will host a reception for Esping during Lindsborg’s 2nd Friday Makers Street Artwalk, Friday, November 10 from 5PM to 8PM. Her project coincides with a Lester Raymer portrait exhibition also taking place in the Red Barn Studio. She says, “I began drawing here in Lindsborg, at the age of 12 with Richard Luster as my instructor. He gave me the wherewithal to develop an exceptionally solid foundation beginning with contour drawing, for excessive hours and excessive years. After 5 years, I was cut loose to see what I could do on my own. My life took detours here and there, but I never lost that desire to draw and to capture the souls of other people on paper.” Gretchen Esping’s formal education was at Bethany College with a B.F.A., an M.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in Education from Kansas State University. She has taught art at the high schools in Lindsborg and Canton/Galva KS. She has been a featured artist at the Sandzén Memorial Gallery and the University of Umeå in Sweden, among other places.
