Shin-hee Chin, Artist in Residence
December 4, 2022 @ 8:00 am - January 28, 2023 @ 5:00 pm
Fiber artist, Shin-hee Chin, McPherson, KS, will be at the Red Barn Studio as Artist-In-Residence through January 28, 2023, preparing a body of work for a solo show at the Mingenback Art Center Gallery at Bethany College, scheduled for the fall of 2023. Some of her work is exploring the creativity and freedom inherent in music and giving it a visible form.
Shin-hee says, “I attempt to reflect the charm of some of my favorite music in a visual format with fiber art pieces and seek to create a dialogue between them. As Hans Hofmann once wrote, ‘To sense the invisible and to be able to create it, that is art.’ His statement illustrates invisibility as an essential component of artistic expression.” To give a visual outlet to that sense, Chin used thread on a reclaimed quilt, unraveled thread over the surface, stitching randomly and repeating this multiple times. She says, “The process of unraveling thread on the quilted top allowed me to execute free and natural movements, a process which echoes the impression of the transient images and fluidity of reality.”
Originally from South Korea, Shin-hee came to the United States in 1988. She has studied in Korea and the United States. Since 2005, she has taught at Tabor College. Widely known for her fiber art, she was most recently invited to take part in the Women’s Voices Summit and exhibition at the Clinton Presidential Center this past Dec. 1-2.
