Shin-hee Chin, Artist In Residence
December 8, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - January 19, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
Shin-hee Chin, McPherson, will be Artist-In-Residence at the Red Barn Studio Museum from December 8th, 2019, to January 19th, 2020, as well as the featured artist during the January 10th Lindsborg 2nd Friday Makers Street Art Walk. Shin-hee’s work ranges from installations to mixed media painting, collage, and a variety of forms of fiber art. She brings with her the cultural context of both South Korea, where she was born and raised, and the United States, where she immigrated with her husband. At the same time, her work bears the powerful imprint of feminism and Christian spirituality as she brings value to the daily work of women through the ages and to the present time. With that intent, she sometimes chooses materials and process that in themselves are tedious, giving her that frame of reference, but leading to “pieces [that] speak not so much of sorrow, anger, regrets, but rather, of healing, recovering, inner joy attained by/through converting the physical, oppressive condition into the stimulating and dynamic inner resources for own creative life.” Shin-hee’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; her plan during her residency is to finish work for a solo exhibition in conjunction with the Spencer project, “Shattering the Void,” at the Salina Art Center, Jan 15-March 8, 2020.
