Mark Barnette – Artist in Residence

“I photograph natural and human landscapes. Born in 1956, I was brought up to revere pre-revisionist US history and the 19th and 20th century landscape artists that informed American notions of the nation’s character and how it ought to look. I work to synthesize these influences with the effects of time, economic violence, and the human longing for order and beauty.
Self-directed arts education. Photographing since childhood, with rigor since 2009. I live with my wife Jodie in Portland, ME. Beauty without sentimentality is a goal of all my work.”
Barnette’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions, numerous group exhibitions, as well as online exhibits and publications. In addition, he has done residencies in St. Louis, MO and Saratoga, WY. His work may be viewed at https://www.mark-barnette.com.
