Milford Greer (1927-1972) block print, "Last Show" pencil signed in lower right, fair condition, overall toning, Milford Greer was born and grew up in Geuda Springs, Kansas, a few miles north of the Oklahoma border. At the age of fifteen his family moved to Galva, Kansas, where his father was the principal of the local school. Greer enrolled at Kansas State University with the intention of becoming a journalist, but after his freshman year he enlisted in the Navy. While he was stationed in Seattle his interest in art was sparked. Greer began attending classes at the Seattle Art Museum until he had to ship out on the aircraft carrier Wasp. The fall of 1946 found him enrolled at Bethany College as a sophomore majoring in art education. Milford studied for two more years before leaving Bethany to complete his degree at the Art Institute of Chicago. Milford’s teacher and mentor during his years in Lindsborg was Lester Raymer. A strong friendship developed that would span Greer’s lifetime. In 1960 Mildford, Dr. Erling Struxness of Hutchinson and Lester Raymer joined to buy a house in Taos, New Mexico. Although the house was sold eighteen months later, Milford stayed on in New Mexico and developed a fine reputation as a painter and promoter of the arts in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Taos region. On April 3, 1972, while driving back to Taos after visiting family at Moundridge for Easter, his vehicle crashed and he was killed.
