Elston Flohr, mixed media carousel, 1980
Elston Flohr (1923-2011) made this carousel in 1980. He carved and painted the horses, built and painted the carousel and figured out the electrical mechanisms. The lights and music box are in working order, however the motor or switch that drives the carousel’s motion do not work. Winning bids are packaged and shipped by UPS. The top of the carousel has 10 tiny painting depicting scenes from Lindsborg, KS; 1. Bethany Lutheran Church, 2. Statue of Carl Aaron Swensson (founder of Bethany College), 3. Lane Hart Hall (first ladies dormitory at Bethany College), 4. The Jaderborg House, 5. Presser Hall (oldest occupies building on Bethany College campus), 6. Coronado Heights (sand stone castle built as a WPA project) 7. Carnegie Library (building on Bethany College campus that burned down in 1981, after the carousel was created) 8. Swedish Pavilion ( built as an international exposition building for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. After the fair, the Pavilion was moved to Bethany College Campus. It has been relocated to the McPherson County Old Mill Museum) 9. The Old Mill Museum, 10. Old Main (at the time it built, was the tallest building on the Great Plains, serving Bethany College and its students between 1886 and 1968, when it burned.
Condition: fair condition – lights and music work, but carosel does not spin. Can be fixed.
