Elk is a lithograph, signed "James E Allen" (1894-1964) in lower right, in good condition, measuring 9×12.75. Total dimensions are 18×21.75×1. An important American printmaker, painter and illustrator, James Edward Allen studied art techniques at the Art Academy, Chicago, the Art Students League and the Hans Hoffman School, New York City. His instructors included Joseph Pennell, Robert Brackman, Robert Philipp, William Auerbach-Levy and Arshile Gorky. Allen began his career as an illustrator in 1913 and during the following years he was commissioned by many major magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post. Most of his original lithographs and etchings were created during the 1930’s – 1940’s.
