Schildt, Gary - bronze on wood base, good condition,
Pony Express rider is a bronze on a wood base by Gary Schildt, in good condition, stamped "Schildt 13/30 1967" on cast base, and measuring 12.5×12.5×5. Total dimensions are 13.25×12.5×7. Born in 1938 in Helena, Montana, Gary Schildt’s talent as an artist cleared a path for him to escape the poverty and isolation of his youth on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. His skills as an illustrator, painter and sculptor made it possible to obtain an education, gave him the chance to travel, and have brought him both respect and admiration from a broad community of western artists and collectors. Known as an Impressionist painter and sculptor of Western figures, particularly Indians and children, Schildt in 1999 received the Montana Governor’s Award for the Arts, and was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2014. Among his influences, William Davis, director of the commercial art program at City College in San Francisco, advised Schildt at the end of his schooling, “If you go into commercial art now you will never want to paint again in 10 years. You will learn to hate art.” In 1962, Schildt enlisted in the Army, and after stateside service at Fort Ord and Fort Sill, he returned to the Blackfeet Reservation and set up a studio in Browning, where he remained for several years. Many of the works of his “Reservation Series” are now housed at the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning. After living and working on the Blackfeet Reservation, painting the scenes of daily life on the reservation, he moved to the East Glacier side, and as of 2016 continued to work on paintings and sculptures depicting the traditional lives of the Blackfeet people.
